Who Should Take This Course?

This course is ideal for students that are at an advanced level and looking to further deepen their skills and understanding of music. In addition to students who are interested in simply gaining expertise in music theory and musicianship, and for those students considering the pursuit of a college music degree (major or minor) at a university or conservatory, this class will be vital in helping you prepare for that endeavor. This course assumes a very thorough understanding of harmony (including the main types of chromatic harmony), cadences, musical structure, and advanced musical terminology. It is designed to dive into expert-level topics and provide students with an expert-level understanding of academic materials and the advancement of vital skill sets, which can assist in testing out of basic undergraduate theory and ear training courses. This class is open to students ages 15 through adult. The class will meet once per week for 75 minutes.

  • advanced modulation techniques 

  • ternary forms

  • rondo forms

  • concerto forms

  • voice exchange

  • types of 6/4 chords

  • ascending/descending circle of fifths progressions

  • figured bass composition

  • complex music analysis

  • counterpoint (invention style)

  • fugue structure

  • Introduction to 20th Century compositional techniques, included matrix graphing

  • advanced improvisation including modulation to other key areas

  • execution of ornamentation

  • continuo realization 

  • advanced ear training (pitch identification, triad and inversion identification, chord progression identification, etc.)

Music Theory for Young Musicians in the Style of Russian School of Piano Playing by Sophia Gorlin

Once class registration is complete, Dr. Focks will make recommendations according to each participant's skill level.
